Rooming In
Here at the Novant Health Maya Angelou Women's Health and Wellness Center we believe mothers and babies belong together. Recently, we began a new service called rooming in, meaning that your baby will stay with you in your hospital room from birth until you both go home.
The benefits for you and your newborn are significant. Rooming in with your baby helps you learn your baby's cues: how s/he responds when hungry, tired, or wants to be held.
Advantages for your baby:
- Sleeps better
- Cries less
- Feeds more often
- Gains weight better
- Less likely to become jaundiced.
Advantages for you:
- You can sleep when your baby sleeps
- You'll get to know your baby better
- You can find comfortable feeding positions
- Feeding cues are more easily recognized
- Your milk comes in sooner
- You'll be better prepared when you go home.
Rooming in enables the natural bonding process between mother and child to proceed, uninterrupted, from the very first day of life, which means that you and your baby enjoy the best possible beginning.
If you have a cesarean birth
It may help to have someone with you during your hospital stay to help you care for your baby. This way, while you're recovering you'll still have the benefits of rooming-in and spending time together.
Learning to care for your baby
If you feel nervous about caring for a newborn, you're not alone. We know that learning about your baby is an important part of your stay in the hospital. Our staff will gladly teach you about caring for a newborn.
